When to travel to India?

The best time to travel to India is from mid-November to the end of March unless you are staying in the far north of the country (in Ladakh for example), where it is best to travel between mid-May and the end of October.

Temperatures in May range from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, or even 45 degrees Celsius in the Ganges plain.

In June, the monsoon lasts until September, or November and December in the Chennai (Madras) and Trivandrum regions. Waterspouts hit the country with the exception of Kashmir and Ladakh, with a peak in July and August, a period not recommended for travelers.

The rains then decrease and stop in mid-September in the Northwest, in late September in the Northeast. The temperature then drops slightly. From December it can be very cold in northern India.

In the northern mountains, however, it is best to avoid summer; the humid heat is unbearable. The desert region of The Indus (Rajasthan, Kutch, and northern Gujarat) also experiences strong daytime heat that contrasts with the cool nights.
